Thanks for your video (explanation)...you know what, when I do Log and Capture and I m going to Capture Settings+Device Control and CLICKING on FireWire NTSC (HERE IS THE POINT): a small window pop up and say: UNABLE TO INITIALIZE VIDEO DECK. YOU MAY STILL LOG OFFLINE CLIPS OR USE CAPTURE NOW. and when I click on capture now It doesn't let me log and capture my video..... Thanks for your time!

Camera: Sony HDR-CX160. Will Log and Transfer import footage from that camera? Ignore my second question. I've done further research, and I got the answer I was looking for.

Give me the exact model of your camera and I will be able to help you out a little better. Log and Transfer should work. You can copy the files onto an external hard drive or your desktop etc. Please check out my tutorial on "Setting the Capture Scratch" to get a better idea of where your video files will end up once you use Log and Transfer.

I've got 2 questions: first, I have a Sony camcorder from around 2009 and it records in ache and saves to mts files. So log and transfer will still let me import, right? Second, will I have to keep the camera plugged in/keep the files on my camera or copy them elsewhere so they can stay in pro 7? Thanks!

Up in the top left of the Log and Transfer screen is a button with a folder image. Click on that and it will open a Finder window. You must manually find the folder containing the clips. If the files are on an SD card, you may have to click through the folders of the card until you find one labeled AVCHD. It might also have a different name depending on the manufacturer of your camera.

You are going to have to use a third party program to convert the files. Roxio's Toast Titanium works great. The thing is it's around $99. If anyone else knows of a free program to convert files, let me know.

What if it's MTS files on the camera.

As far as I know, no. It's a pain to set it every time you open Final Cut, but it is a necessary step in the process.

If my firewire to AV doesn't fit into a laptop, can I hook it up to a drive that has a firewire that fits into a laptop?

Sorry it took me a month to answer. Compared to real time, importing HD footage can take a long time (like 2x to 10x longer to import). That's if the file is big. Really small files less than a minute will import in a few seconds. At this point, I would much rather capture 1 hour of footage from a tape using log and capture, instead of using log and transfer to import from a card or hard drive.

I always keep my footage in my capture scratch folder. The capture scratch folder is where Final Cut stores video that you have imported via firewire using log and capture. This was used alot when cameras only captured footage on tape. I still use that folder to store all video clips just as a way to stay organized. My capture scratch folder was on my external hard drive in my project folder, but you can put it wherever. Check out the first tutorial to learn more about capture scratch.

First, what hardware are you using to capture the footage? What type of camera, tape, video format, firewire..etc.? I have had problems capturing using various low quality tapes and cameras. I have also had problems with bad firewire connections. It could be a combination of many things. Just let me know what you are working with.
